Weekly usability research sprints to build a product that consumers will love

Situation

A large protection services company was interested in developing a new security app. The concept was very innovative and the goal was to create a superior product that was consumer-friendly. The client team was seeking a deep understanding of how target users would engage with the mobile app and then use that information to build product features and interactions that are important to the users.

Approach

“Start with the customer experience and work backward toward the technology,” Steve Jobs. Generative research is a process where numerous versions of a solution are used to find the best option; this approach is at the heart of UXR. Orchid Strategy Group employed weekly generative research sprints to guide the design process and ensure collaboration and buy-in between the design and tech teams.

Solution

In order to determine the features to be included in the product, several research phases were conducted to help refine the concept and design elements.  Every week, we conducted studies to identify the strongest features for the app and quantified consumers’ willingness to adopt. We also employed focus groups to uncover reasons why certain features were compelling and used affinity mapping to prioritize product strategy. Lastly, we collaborated with the design team to share research findings and implications during weekly Designer Workshops.

Results

Orchid Strategy Group supported our client in building a working prototype including all of the functionality, navigation, and design. The app is currently in Beta testing. Most importantly, our research saved substantial investment of time and money by directing focus on the most compelling product features for the consumer.
