Building innovation opportunities for the new shared economy
Situation
An established business-to-business (B2B) company was interested in expanding its business model into the shared economy, but wasn't sure where to start. Orchid Strategy Group was engaged to help our client evaluate innovative opportunities and leverage technology in order to build a direct-to-consumer (B2C) product offering.
Approach
Sometimes the hardest part isn't knowing where you want to go, but knowing how to get your idea off the whiteboard and into action. Instead of depending on the client’s old business model of selling through expensive distributors, Orchid Strategy Group collaborated with our client to develop an initial product concept that could be offered directly to end consumers (on-demand workers). We delved into the competitive landscape and delivered a strategic plan, including consumer target personas and brand development. Grounded in user-centric research, we designed a consumer app with all its screens and workflows, iterating and refining all aspects of it. Alongside, we site-mapped, wireframed and designed the marketing website and supporting communications. Further, Orchid Strategy Group created guidelines, documenting the design and providing guidance and all design assets to the development team (coders), facilitating a smooth hand-off.
Solution
The keys to success were creating an experience for users that reflect recent design trends and best practices for B2C apps, including UX and UI design with a clear focus on building a simple, intuitive, yet engaging app. Also, we relied on user research with a working app prototype to evaluate the ease of use and creative direction, as well as to sharpen messaging to clearly communicate the solution and benefits to consumers.
Results
The new app is currently being tested in market with potential users. Early indications reveal strong potential for the product.
